Questions to Ask Before Choosing Dental Implants
Start With the Problem You Want to Solve
Dental implants can support a crown, bridge, or denture, but the right approach depends on more than the number of missing teeth. A useful consultation begins with your goals, medical and dental history, oral health, bite, available bone, and the condition of the surrounding teeth and gums.
An implant is one way to replace a missing tooth. Depending on the situation, alternatives may include a conventional bridge, a removable partial denture, a complete denture, or—in selected cases—leaving a space and monitoring it. Each choice has different tradeoffs involving tooth preparation, surgery, cleaning, repair, timing, and cost.
Questions About Candidacy
What examination and imaging do I need?
The dentist should first examine your teeth, gums, bite, and the proposed implant site. Imaging is selected when it is clinically useful for evaluating bone and nearby anatomy. Ask what information each image adds to the plan.
Could my health or medications affect treatment?
Share your complete health history, medications, supplements, tobacco or nicotine use, and any history of delayed healing. Some conditions do not automatically rule out implant care, but they may change the timing, precautions, or alternatives discussed.
Do I have active gum disease or tooth decay?
Active oral disease may need to be addressed before implant placement. Long-term success also depends on maintaining healthy tissues around the implant and caring for the rest of the mouth.
Questions About the Proposed Treatment
- What will the implant support? Ask whether the plan involves a single crown, an implant bridge, a removable implant-supported denture, or a fixed full-arch restoration.
- Will I need additional procedures? Bone grafting, tooth removal, or other steps may be recommended in some cases, but not every patient needs them.
- What is the expected sequence? Healing and fabrication times vary. Ask which steps are planned, what is provisional, and when the final restoration may be placed.
- Who performs each phase? Confirm who will complete the surgical and restorative steps and whether another clinician may be involved.

Questions About Risks and Maintenance
Implant treatment involves surgery and is not risk-free. Possible complications can include infection, poor integration, changes in surrounding bone or gum tissue, injury to nearby structures, mechanical wear or fracture, and the need for repair or replacement. Your own risks depend on the site, health, habits, and treatment plan.
Ask how to clean around the proposed restoration, what professional maintenance is recommended, and which symptoms should prompt a call. Bleeding, swelling, persistent discomfort, a change in the bite, or movement of an implant restoration deserves evaluation.
Questions About Fees
Ask for a written plan that distinguishes the implant, abutment, temporary restoration, final crown or prosthesis, imaging, extractions, grafting, sedation or comfort options, and follow-up care. Insurance benefits and financing are separate from clinical suitability, so compare both the treatment and the total estimated fee.
A Consultation Should Help You Decide
A thoughtful implant consultation should explain what is necessary, what is optional, reasonable alternatives, expected stages, limitations, and ongoing care. It should also leave room for your questions without promising a particular outcome.
